Intensive green roofs are widely used on commercial buildings where owners want to have large green areas that incorporate all sizes and types of plants. A green roof or living roof is a roof of a building that is partially or completely covered with vegetation and a growing medium planted over a waterproofing membrane it may also include additional layers such as a root barrier and drainage and irrigation systems.

Green roof development involves the creation of contained green space on top of a human made structure. These are not typical point loaded roof gardens as their live load is evenly distributed partially or fully over the roof surface. Green roofs can help reduce energy costsfor a building by acting as another layer of insulation between the inside and outside of the roof. They fall into three main categories extensive intensive and semi intensive.

This green space could be below at or above grade but in all cases it exists separate from the ground.
