With most retaining walls the toe drain will follow the same design as a french drain. A weeping tile system is a simple drainage system installed around your home next to the exterior side of the footing which is the base of your foundation walls. The purpose of weeping tile also referred to as drainage tile or drain tile is to provide a drainage point for draining water that has accumulated at the base of the foundation the footing to the storm sewer beneath your street or into a sump pump liner installed beneath your basement floor. To ensure a quality project the soils used must not become saturated during construction and the final design must route water away from the back of the wall.

Observe your property during and after a heavy rainstorm. Designate the places where water collects either as stagnant pools or running. The design and performance of most retaining walls are based on keeping the area behind the wall relatively dry. Step 2 pour the gravel.

The retaining wall should have few problems holding back the soil but you need to protect your retaining wall against the pressure that can build up if that soil becomes saturated with water. Excavate a trench or series of connected trenches to accommodate the perforated drain tiles. Use a shovel to cut up sections of turf and place them as intact as possible on a tarp for later. There will be some gravel below the concrete floor but you ll need to add enough washed.
